Thank you for booking your RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructors Endorsement with us. Please find joining instructions relating to this course below.

About the course

You probably already have information about the Advanced Powerboat Instructor Course but if you would like to refresh your memory please view our webpage – Course details.

All course bookings are subject to our Terms & Conditions of Business which can be found on our website – Terms & Conditions of Business

The APBI Endorsement focuses on:

  1. What are the key teaching points relating to the Intermediate, Advanced and Tender Operators Courses
  2. How to structure these courses to best effect
  3. Are you at the right standard to be able to teach these courses both in respect of practical experience/capability and theoretical knowledge

Whereas the PBI course addresses how to teach and a good amount of time is spent on the water training the sessions, on the APBI course we tend to either spend time on the water undertaking the sessions or discussing the structure and content of the course. You will be asked to teach/lead both classroom and on water sessions simply as a means to create a discussion amongst the group on that particular subject.

Preparation

You should prepare so that if asked you could run sessions on any of the elements of the Intermediate or Advanced Courses. Remember as you prepare the expected entry level of individuals to these courses as this should influence the level you ‘pitch’ your session at. It will be your choice how to lead these sessions whether that be sitting as a group chatting about the subject, standing in front of the board, using PowerPoint or running a practical session afloat. Most importantly do what you feel happiest with and is most appropriate to the session that you are delivering.

As you prepare make sure that you are comfortable with all aspects of the syllabi although of course the endorsement is likely to refine and enhance your knowledge of the subjects covered as we progress.

Materials & pre course preparation

Reading material: You should possess and digest the following ahead of your course (Follow the links to make sure that you have the most recent version):

Please also bring original certificates – PBI, First Aid, RYA membership number and Advanced Powerboat Course Completion Certificate, Certificate of Competence with Commercial Endorsement etc.

Unless you are traveling from abroad (in which case feel free to use ours) we suggest that you bring your own waterproofs, lifejackets etc. During the winter months we will use drysuits at night, if you have your own then please bring them else we will provide them for you. Please bring any other personal equipment you feel relevant to running the course.

Medical Conditions

At the start of 2012 the RYA slightly altered the requirements for Powerboat Instructors relating to their health. You will need to sign the following statement on the Instructor card we submit to the RYA ‘I declare that I am not suffering from any physical or mental impairment which has an adverse effect on my ability to properly discharge my duty of care as an instructor. I undertake to inform the RYA if this changes and agree to submit to a medical examination if requested by the RYA.’

If you are uncertain whether you have a medical condition that may impact your ability to sign this statement please contact us to discuss this. We would rather discuss and try to resolve issues ahead of a course than afterwards.

Remember too that to teach the Advanced Powerboat Course you will need to be Commercially Endorsed. If your ML5 or ENG1 medical is likely to throw up any issues whatsoever you are recommended to raise these issues with RYA Training as soon as possible.

Instructor Code of Conduct

The RYA have recently introduced an Instructor Code of Conduct. As a PBI you may already be aware however if you have not previously seen it you can do so here.

Payment

If payment has not been made in full for this course please contact us.

Remember too that at the time of booking/payment we have a special offer on VHF courses. If you intend booking a VHF course too then it is materially cheaper to do this now as the rate is reduced for that course from £100 to £75 per head (plus RYA fee). You don’t need to decide the dates you will attend the VHF course though and you can schedule a date at some time later – we run these courses every two weeks.

Arrival time, Directions & Parking

Unless agreed otherwise, we start all courses at 9am so please aim to be there 10 – 15mins early to allow you to park and for us to make you a tea/coffee etc. If you are running late or need last minute directions please call the Office number (01202 686666) as it is diverted to our mobiles on the morning of courses.

Things to think about bringing

  • Suitable footwear – boat shoes, trainers, boating wellies etc. Not open toed sandals or black soled trainers. Shoes may get wet so a spare pair is advisable. Nice warm socks make a difference in the winter!
  • Warm clothes – we will provide waterproofs/drysuits but these don’t really provide much warmth as this needs to be from the layers you wear underneath. With waterproofs on you shouldn’t really get wet but it is worth having a change of clothes available. We will be out at night which inevitably is far colder so bear this in mind in terms of the warm clothes that you bring. We strongly recommend that you bring a beanie type hat to wear at night and potentially during the day. If your course is over the winter period then we may insist that you wear a drysuit. Feel free to bring one if you have one however we will provide one free of charge as necessary.
  • Bottle of water
  • Sunglasses & sun cream – even on overcast days the glare from the water can be significant.
  • A hat, gloves etc
  • Any medication you take
  • Reading glasses
  • Camera – feel free to bring one but it is carried at your own risk for obvious reasons
  • Passport photo for certificate

Food

We will provide teas and coffees and you can either get sandwiches from the convenience store on site (Cobbs Quay Marina & Lymington – NOT available at Port of Poole Marina). You should budget about £5 per day for lunch. You are welcome to bring your own packed lunch if you wish.

Accommodation

There are plenty of places to stay in Poole and Lymington to suit all budgets. Bear in mind that if you are booking for just one night that B&Bs will often be reticent to take a one night booking a few weeks ahead of a course but nearer the time will want to fill the bed. Therefore do call any places that said they were full as places seem to free themselves up! If you need any further advice on accommodation please contact our office.  A list of accommodation is available here.

We look forward to welcoming you shortly. If in the meantime you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
