Every day of our lives we use electronic systems to navigate our cars, receive our groceries and ensure that the parcel delivery companies can find our homes – boating is no different and boating navigation systems are rapidly evolving – which is why partnering with the likes of Savvy Navvy to put these systems at the heart of our courses to bring you discounted charts makes sense.
One of the key developments over the last 12 months is that we have re-centred our training around the use of electronics – just as you will when you navigate any boats or PWs nowadays. We love paper charts and that’s worked for RYA training courses since they began but the reality is that boaters are using electronic charts and sources of tidal information every day – just as we ourselves do. With Imray ceasing the production of paper charts in 2025 and the UK Hydrographic Office flagging their desire to cease production sometime soon the RYA have recognised this transition and the project to fully utilise electronic as opposed to paper sources of nautical information has been allocated the term #digitalfirst.
So how does this impact our courses?
In reality it doesn’t really make a huge difference to the way we teach as we’d like to think we are one of the schools that’s been at the forefront of this for years anyway. That said there’s never room for complacency so over the quieter winter period we’ve revisited the way we run each of our courses, added more tablets loaded with Savvy Navvy and Navionics plus the relevant apps and links and installed large touchscreen TVs to make the courses as joined up as we can. It’s fair to say that it’s a fast changing area and we along with other schools will continue to ensure that we fully embrace the progress and will add in any RYA advice as it arrives.
So what’s this offer all about then?
Simply, when you come on one of our courses then just ahead of the course you’ll get an email that gives you a code to get Savvy Navvy at a discounted rate. You’ll use the app on our courses so you can wait to see if you like the product or you may choose to sign up ahead of the course and have a look around the app. Whatever you choose to do we hope you’ll agree this is a handy offer and we hope you give at least the trial period a shot.
