Children’s Powerboat Level 1

Key Course Details

Duration: 1 day

Time: 9am to 5pm

Group Size: 3 per boat

Min Age: From 8

Price: £190 to 200

The RYA Level One course is an introduction to boating for children aged 8+. A great course it gives them a good grounding in the basics plus spends time on the safety aspects of boating too.

We are recognised by the RYA as a children’s training centre for powerboating meaning that we have suitable boats and child protection procedures for teaching children aged 8 upwards away from their parents/guardians.

As parents who have boated with young children we understand how to work with children and ensure that they have a fun time when with us but with a total focus on safety. We have a full Child Protection Policy (copy available – just ask) and Viv Glatzel acts as our Child Protection Coordinator. We insist that during the time your children are with us that you are available by phone at all times.

Course Duration

1 day from 9am to 5pm (may finish about 4pm depending on whether the children on the course are getting tired.)

Minimum Age & prior experience

For Level 1 the minimum age is 8 and no prior boating experience is necessary.

Our craft

For our smaller participants our 5m Humber or our 17ft Logic Marine powerboats are great for this course.

Instructor – student ratio

3 students to 1 Instructor per boat. For child protection purposes we always ensure there are two or more children on the course. Whilst most children seem to be happy coming along on their own it may be more fun for them if they attend with a friend.

As you will see from elsewhere on our website we pride ourselves on the quality and experience of our Instructors and particularly their ability to instruct in a fun, patient and encouraging manner.

What subjects does this course cover?

This course is in effect a scaled down version of Level 2 focussing purely on the practical handling elements of Level 2. During the course almost all of the time is spent on the water practising manouvres but there is also time to look at the safety aspects of boating. There are no classroom based theory sessions.

Some of the topics that we cover during the course include:

  • Launching & recovery
  • Boat handling
  • Approaching and securing to a buoy
  • Anchoring
  • Leaving and coming alongside
  • Handling a boat at planing speed
  • Man overboard
