Welcome!

Powerboat Training UK is a professional RYA Training Centre running the full range of RYA Powerboat, Motorboat, Shorebased and PWC Training Courses.  Our Headquarters and main training base is in Poole but we also have a base in the Solent and have trained people on their own boats throughout the UK, Europe and even in the Middle East.  We run courses throughout the year in all weathers.

If you have a boat from 8ft to about 33ft then in all likelihood it is courses within the RYA National Powerboat Scheme that are right for you. If you're starting out, looking to boat abroad or looking to develop core skills then its probably the Level 2 course that is right for you. To develop skills then perhaps the Intermediate course or for night training and more advanced skill development then consider the Advanced Course.  Other courses are available including dedicated Children's courses.

Is your boat over about 33ft perhaps with twin engines and with a cabin. If so in all probability then it is the RYA Motor Cruising Scheme that will best serve your needs. The typical entry point qualification is the 4 day Dayskipper Practical Course although some start with the Helmsman's Course. For more experienced Skippers then consider either the Coastal Skipper course or perhaps even the pinnacle of boating qualifications - Yachtmaster.   If you are considering working commercially then you might be thinking about your Coastal Skipper or YM Exams.

We're running right through the Winter. Powerboat level 2 Courses every week, VHF courses every two weeks and numerous Navigation, Advanced and Instructor courses - call/email with dates.   Don't forget our Gift Vouchers. Get a 10% discount - buy £100 of vouchers and get £110 worth!!  Vouchers will be sent out along with the RYA Powerboat Handbook to give as a present with Level 2 courses.

There are a variety of courses that you can take to further your skills without stepping on a boat. Most popular is the VHF course followed closely by the Dayskipper Theory and the great new 2 day Navigation Course will surely top the charts soon.  If you have a Radar then this course is essential as is the First Aid course for any Skipper or Crew wanting to take proper care of their guests.  Keeping on top of your engine is addressed by the Diesel engine course whilst a spell with an Instructor on electronics can be really beneficial.

Thinking of going abroad? If so then there's no doubt that you'll need to obtain your International Certificate of Competence ('ICC'). You need to ensure though that you obtain the right one as there are different versions according to whether you sail or have a powerboat/motorboat and according to whether your vessel is above or below 10m. don't forget too that if you intend crusing the inland waterways (including many lakes)  of Europe then you'll need your CEVNI ('Code Européen des Voies de la Navigation Intérieure')

All of the courses that we run are available on our fleet of RIBs, our Botnia Targa Motor Cruiser or our Jet Bikes. If you have your own craft then of course it usually  makes real sense to undertake the course on your craft. The benefits of doing so range from the time that our Instructors can spend with you addressing the specific handling characteristics of your craft to the time that we can spend looking at the set up of your boat including the safety kit that you carry and the electronics that you have on board. We travel throughout the world to undertake such training.

Whilst we are a RYA Training Centre and most of our courses are RYA accredited there is always the chance to undertake bespoke training or more specialist courses. For example it may be that you want to spend a few hours practicing close quarter work in a marina or perhaps to finally understand the chartplotter that you just had installed. Whatever your training needs then we will will identify the most appropriate instructor to spend time with and schedule a session with you. Irrespective of your need we will be able to assist.

Our clients range from those starting out in boating to those that have been boating almost since they were born.  The majority want powerboat or motorboat  courses for personal reasons yet we also train many commercial users from both Governmental Agencies and commercial firms.  Whilst many of our clients are based in or around the South Coast over 48% in 2007 travelled from further afield with our record so far being Bahrain and the Antarctic! (beat that!).

Our family run business was founded on a passion for boating in all of its forms and our Instructors are experienced professionals whose passion is helping others to enjoy their boating through the enhancement of people's skills and knowledge. Without exception they approach instruction in a calm relaxed manner never forgetting that you're there to have fun!

As a RYA Training Centre we adhere to strict operating and safety standards and we are regularly inspected to ensure we continue to exceed these standards. Our Instructors are all avid powerboaters for whom training is a passion not a job.

Our main base in Poole Harbour presents the perfect environment for powerboat training with the combination of challenging rough water for Advanced courses yet sheltered safe conditions for beginners. As the second largest natural harbour in the world it offers a huge operating area within an area of outstanding beauty.

We hope this site gives you an insight into how we approach our powerboat, motorboat courses and our shorebased and theory courses. That said no site can ever give you the full picture so do please give us a call or drop us an email  or pop in for a coffee - we love to talk boats & training!
