To develop the essential knowledge and understanding of subjects like charts, tides, navigation and areas  like safety and distress alerting to aid those boating close inshore 2 days from 9am to 5pm. or ONLINE in your own time

Can be up to 8 students but generally there are a maximum of 3 or 4. Online - just you and a cup of coffee! No prior boating experience is necessary. The course equally suits those new to boating and also those who have just taken a course like Level 2 or Helmsman
The course appeals to a variety of individuals:

1) Those who have just completed a course like Powerboat Level 2 or Motor Cruising Helmsman who want to develop their knowledge on to the next level. The basic level practical courses spend the majority of their time afloat so time spent on theory is by necessity quite limited. The Essential Navigation & Seamanship course perfectly compliments them.

2)  Those keen to refresh their knowledge as they have become a bit 'rusty' as they may not have used their charts, tides, navigation skills for a while.

3) Those starting out boating (whether sail or power)

4) For those thinking about buying a boat the course serves as a great way to become a more 'educated buyer'. Our base in Poole is in a 1200 berth marina so you will be able to see a huge number of craft during your time with us. Being around so many boats and able to discuss the pros and cons of the various styles with the Instructors really helps when it comes to assessing the huge number of craft out there to buy.

The course is relevant whether you have your own boat or don't ever intend owning your own craft.

When in the classroom we run from 9-5 both days making sure you get good value for your investment. There is no minimum age as such however we would advise that 12 seems realistic for those children already involved in boating.

Our classroom: We schedule quite a few of these courses each year - check out the calendar.

Groups: We can schedule to suit you and can train at your club or office subject to there being a suitable training area.

Online: Anytime!

The RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship was launched in 2007 as the RYA Basic Safety & Navigation Course. 2010 saw an overhaul to the course and 2011 sees it relaunched with its new name AND for the first time from the RYA with an online module.

So there are now two ways that you can undertake this course:

  1. Spend two days with an Instructor in our classrooms
  2. Undertake the course online

Obviously different people benefit from different ways of learning and some people learn well on their own whereas for others a classroom and the input of an instructor works best.  We are always happy to chat things through with you to help you decide which is best.

You can check out the course here and view some demonstration screens - Here

The syllabus builds on what we cover on courses like Powerboat Level 2 and Motor Cruising Helmsman and addresses the following subjects:

  • Charts and publications
  • Safety
  • Engine checks
  • Buoyage
  • Tidal awareness
  • Visual and electronic navigation
  • Pilotage
  • Rules of the road
  • Anchoring
  • Weather forecasts
  • Passage planning
