We created this course to address the desire of many boaters to better understand how to navigate using their electronics. This course does not replace any of the RYA courses that we run but works alongside them and focuses all of the time just on the subject of GPS/Chartplotter based navigation.  Typically on this course we cover:

  • The basics of GPS including waypoints, routes, Datums, COG, SOG, XTE etc
  • Chartplotters, how they work, pros & cons, setup and use
  • The use of laptop based plotters
  • Latitude and longitude refresher
  • Passage planning integrating the use of electronics with traditional charts
  • Use of techniques such as Waypoint Web, Compass Rose plotting, Waypoint Ladder

This course can work in a variety of ways:

  • Just with you and your crew on your boat either with it on its berth or undertaking  a small passage .
  • As a classroom based course with a group of individuals coming together for the course.
  • Classroom based with just you (and your crew if you want)

Whilst we have a structure for this course we can always be flexible and if there are particular areas that  are not covered that you would like to address then just discuss these with us and we'll see how we can fit them into the course. For example if we're on your boat then we might take the opportunity to give you a basic insight into radar if you have it fitted.

In our classroom we have training chartplotters and radars supplied by Raymarine for use on the course. Irrespective of the make of equipment that you have on board the Raymarine equipment will work in a similar way to yours.

Note: This not a RYA course.
