This is a new 2 day course for 2007 and has been created to satisfy the demand from powerboaters and sailors for a dedicated but short course focusing on navigation techniques and safety.

The course will help you to develop your navigation skills and awareness of general boating safety. The course suits those with powerboats or motor cruisers who either are starting out and haven’t yet undertaken any courses or those who have already undertaken a practical course (eg Powerboat Level 2 or MC Helmsman) but want to spend more time on the theory aspects.

As part of the course cost you will be given a course pack, this includes:

  • Exercise & Course Information Booklet

  • RYA Charts

  • Basic Navigation and Safety Course Notes

  • Free Training Simulator/RYA Electronic Chart Plotter

  • Free Course Plotter

In addition to the RYA pack you will require:

  • RYA Training Almanac ~ available from your instructor

  • Dividers (large), 2B pencils, soft eraser [can all be purchased at the start of the course] and a calculator.

The full course syllabus covers:

Below is some feedback from students on a pilot course run just before the course was formerly launched:

"..an excellent introduction that all new boat users should be encouraged to complete. It gives you confidence to get the most out of your boat, whilst being aware of the risks."

"..to be recommended for newcomers, but also very useful for those who want to do more than pull ropes and tie on fenders."

"I would definitely recommend it to new boat owners or anyone keen to get into boating."

"..a great mix of information with a good hands-on feel."

"I now feel more confident in my abilities and can't wait to get on the water and put the theory into practice."

"Useful to all, regardless of experience. Good background knowledge to enhance your enjoyment of being afloat."
