About us
Powerboat Training
UK is a family run professional RYA Training Centre running the full range of
RYA Powerboat, Motorboat, Shorebased and PWC Training Courses. Our Headquarters
and main training base is in Poole but we also have a base in the Solent and
have trained people on their own boats throughout the UK, Europe and even in the
Middle East. We run courses throughout the year in all weathers.
We are Paul and Viv Glatzel and we founded Powerboat Training UK ('PTUK')
back in 2000. When we founded the business our aim was to grow a school that
coupled an honest and straightforward approach to dealing with our customers (
- deal with others as you wish to be dealt with yourself!) coupled to a highly
professional approach to training using first rate facilities and kit.
The school has grown and evolved far faster than we could have ever hoped and
we would like to think that we are now considered amongst the premier providers
of RYA Powerboat, Motor Cruising and Shorebased training in the UK - and for
certain specialist courses further afield.
From our early days we have always been hugely careful about which
Instructors we ask to train for us and always ensure that they go through a full
induction programme before they work with you. After all whilst we can provide
the facilities and the kit for your training course it is the Instructor that
you will remember and will inspire you to recommend us to others.
Our Chief Powerboat Instructor is Terry McFall and he started training with
us in 2001. What Terry has meant to the school and its development was
epitomised by the award to him in 2007 of "RYA Powerboat Instructor of the Year"
- a great accolade and testament to his approach to instruction.
Don Roper joined us in 2006 from Dorset Police's Marine Section and soon
became the Chief Instructor of our Motor Cruising division. With the acquisition
of our own motor cruiser this division has moved forward very well and is now a
core part of the school. Don too has quickly become an intrinsic part of the
school.
Overall we work with roughly 16 Instructors the vast majority of whom have
been with us for many years. In addition to Terry & Don we have a group of 4
Senior Instructors - see the Instructors
section - who run most of our courses. As Senior Instructors they are all
Advanced Instructors and take on additional responsibility for areas of the
school.
In 2003 we were delighted when the RYA asked Paul to write the
RYA Powerboat Handbook for them. This
was a great compliment and lots of fun to do.
We are very much a family run business and our children Hannah (11) and Sam
(9) play an active part in the school and are pretty good boat handlers too! Our
company mascot is "mad dog Buffa" our family dog.
As we have stated our approach is very much to be honest and upfront with
people about training feeling that by doing so - even if it means recommending
people to other training providers - that this is the right approach. Like any
business we won't get everything right but we'll be honest enough to admit our
mistakes and work to improve.
We sincerely hope that we have the chance of providing training to you and
look forward to working with you.
